Abstract

Galvanic Corrosion is a fundamental concept of corrosion mechanism on metal surface. It is well defined when corrosion happened on a two connected metals system. In regard to metals nature, mechanical and financial due to corrosion in industrials or mechanical field, it is required to study on corrosion phenomena for Mechanical Engineering students. However, our apparatus is not well readily used because lack of technology and maintenance. So, build a new one that representative for corrosion study is main aimed in this project.

Apparatus frame was made of L-shape steel as frame, acrylic as wall, wood triplex as floor. A power supply and Arduino was used to enable corrosion and to intercept the corrosion process. To measure apparatus performance, a stainless steel and a copper wire was used as two electrodes for a Galvanic corrosion test. Over potential of 2.5, 5 and 10 V was set on a power supply. Electrolytes for corrosion test was HCl 1 M, NaOH 1 M, Padang bay seawater, Limau Manis groundwater.

HCl and seawater made stainless steel and copper as cathode and anode respectively. It may relate to existence of chloride ion in electrolytes. Meanwhile hydrogen gas evolution in HCl and metal disposition in seawater on cathode side. NaOH made a reverse of electrode; copper as cathode and stainless steel as anode. Gas bubble was found around stainless steel. Groundwater does not corroded copper or stainless steel.
